Resume tailoring

How to tailor your resume to a job description

Compare the job’s requirements with evidence from your real experience, prioritize the strongest matches, identify gaps, and rewrite only what can be supported.

Tailoring is not copying a job description. It is making relevant qualifications easier to find and understand.

1. Collect the right inputs

  • The complete job posting, including required and preferred qualifications
  • Your current resume
  • Verified examples that may not yet appear on the resume
  • Accurate dates, tools, certifications, and results
  • Any application instructions or required file format

Remove sensitive or confidential information before using an external AI tool.

2. Extract the employer’s requirements

Separate the posting into categories instead of treating every repeated word as equally important:

Responsibilities

What the person will do, own, support, create, or improve.

Skills and tools

Technical skills, systems, methods, languages, and equipment.

Qualifications

Experience, education, certifications, availability, and legal requirements.

Context

Industry, customer type, team structure, work environment, and priorities.

Occupation data from O*NET can help clarify common tasks and skill terminology, but the actual job posting remains the primary source for that employer’s role.

3. Build a requirement map before rewriting

Job requirementYour evidenceStatusResume action
Resolve customer issues by email and chatTwo years supporting account questions through both channelsDemonstratedMove a clear support bullet near the top.
Document cases in SalesforceUsed Salesforce to add notes and update case statusDemonstratedName Salesforce in the relevant bullet.
Create knowledge-base articlesDrafted internal troubleshooting notes, not published articlesPartialDescribe the actual documentation work; do not claim ownership of a knowledge base.
Spanish fluencyNo professional fluencyNot demonstratedDo not add it. Decide whether the gap prevents applying.

4. Rewrite the strongest evidence

A useful bullet often combines an action, the work or method, and a meaningful scope or result:

Action+Work or method+Scope or result

General

Helped customers with account issues.

Tailored and supported

Resolved account-access and billing questions through email and live chat, documenting case details and follow-up actions in Salesforce.

The improved version uses job-relevant language because the candidate actually performed those tasks and used that tool.

5. Handle qualification gaps honestly

A gap is information, not an invitation to invent experience. Choose among four honest actions:

  1. Clarify: Add an overlooked example that genuinely demonstrates the requirement.
  2. Connect: Explain a transferable skill without pretending it is identical experience.
  3. Learn: Begin a real course, project, or credential and describe its actual status accurately.
  4. Leave it out: Do not add a qualification you do not have.

6. Use this evidence-first tailoring prompt

Compare my resume with the job posting. Create a table showing each important requirement as Demonstrated, Partially Demonstrated, Not Demonstrated, or Not Applicable. Quote or summarize the evidence from my resume. Do not invent experience, skills, certifications, dates, employers, or metrics. Ask me for missing facts before rewriting. Then recommend which verified points should move, expand, shorten, or be removed.

Source for occupation terminology

Use occupation data as a reference, then verify terminology against the specific role and your own experience.
